In this workshop, participants will examine the process of making short films to accompany their poetry. They will study the elements needed to translate the written word into moving images. This will include exploring different visual mediums, considering narrative versus non-narrative approaches, and exploring soundscapes.
Some knowledge of film and photography is helpful but not essential. This workshop is for those interested in interdisciplinary arts practice and experimenting with new mediums. Those wishing to find new audiences for their work will find this workshop useful in creating short-form filmed work.
What the workshop covers:
– What are poetry-films?
– Finding the medium that fits the poem – film, found media, and photo
– Considering sound
– Breaking down a poem for visual translation.
– Narrative and non-narrative approaches.
– Making sample films.
What a participant can expect on the day:
The workshop will combine the theoretical and the practical. Participants will make a short sample film based upon their own work. They should bring with them an original poem they have composed as well as an object(s) they feel relate to the poem (photograph, stone, key, etc.).
Workshop Tutor Biography:
Jesse Gilbert is a filmmaker from the Beara Peninsula. His films take inspiration from his home place and have won awards at festivals both in Ireland and internationally. He is the current filmmaker-in-residence for the county of Kerry, where he works intergenerationally with those interested in filmmaking. In 2025, Jesse collaborated with poet Emer Fallon in delivering a series of poetry-film workshops.
