Ponc Press: The Process of Printing

Heiko Rolff will give an insight into the process of having a poem printed or working on a book with us. An explanation of letterpress printing and a sense of our deeply manual, somewhat archaic, artisan methods! We will bring along some cases of lead type, a composing stick and a chase (with furniture) so we can physically demonstrate how we typeset. The Illustrator and Writer will both speak about the unique experience of working with us, which is quite unlike working digitally.

Ponc Press is a bespoke letterpress printing business using an original Heidelberg 1955 Platen Press. The studio was formerly known as the Hawthorn Press then Púca Press before it was taken over and renamed in July 2014 by its new owners. We continue the fine tradition of letterpress printing for which the press is known.

Translating Brandon Mountain by Ceaití Ní Bheildiúin
The poems for this numbered, limited-edition, hand-crafted book, printed at Ponc Press, Dingle, 2022, have been drawn from Ceaití Ní Bheidliúin’s award-winning Irish language poetry collection, Agallamh sa Cheo – Cnoc Bhréanainn, Coiscéim, 2019, and are presented here with lucid English translations by David Knowles on opposite pages to them, plus lino-cut images by Dingle artist Deirdre McKenna.

Ceaití Ní Bheildiúin
Ceaití Ní Bheildiúin is an Irish language poet currently living in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. The first English translations of her work were published last year. Translating Brandon Mountain, Ponc Press, presents Ní Bheildiúin’s Irish language poems alongside their English translations, with translations there by David Knowles. Let the Hair Sit, Dedalus Press, is with translations by Paddy Bushe. Ní Bheildiúin has four collections of original Irish poetry to her name, Agallamh sa Cheo – Cnoc Bhréanainn, Coiscéim 2019 being her most recent, a collection which has earned her some accolades, amongst them the prestigious Michael Hartnett Award 2021.
